The Stairway to Heaven: How the Hani People Sculpted a Mountain into Art
This is, without a doubt, the world's most beautiful farm. For over 1,300 years, the Hani people have painstakingly sculpted the steep Ailao Mountains of southern Yunnan into a breathtaking ladder of rice terraces that cascade for thousands of feet down to the valley floor. It is a masterpiece of agricultural engineering and land art on a monumental scale.
The most magical time to visit is from December to March, when the terraces are irrigated with water. They transform into thousands of curved, glittering mirrors, reflecting the changing colors of the sky. To witness the sunrise from the Duoyishu viewing platform is a memory that will be seared into your brain forever. As the sky turns from deep purple to soft pink to fiery orange, the water-filled terraces below catch the light, setting the entire landscape ablaze with color. You’ll see the local Hani people, dressed in their distinctive, colorful clothing, walking the narrow paths between the fields, still practicing the ancient rhythms of their ancestors.
Insider Tip:
To capture the best photographs, you need to be strategic. The Duoyishu platforms are best for sunrise, while the Bada or Laohuzui (Tiger's Mouth) platforms are best for sunset. These viewpoints are several kilometers apart, so it's essential to hire a local private driver for the day to transport you between them in time for the best light.
