Qufu

In Qufu, Confucius Is More Than a Philosopher—He’s the King Next Door

For over two millennia, the ideas of Confucius have shaped the bedrock of Chinese society. But to truly understand the man and his incredible legacy, you must travel to his hometown of Qufu. Here, he is not an abstract philosopher but a revered ancestor, a king, a living presence. You'll explore his story through the "Three Kongs": the Temple, the Mansion, and the Cemetery.

The Temple of Confucius is a sprawling, awe-inspiring complex that grew over 2,000 years to a scale second only to the Forbidden City. Next, you’ll step into the Kong Family Mansion, a vast palace where the direct descendants of Confucius lived as a sort of spiritual royalty. Finally, you’ll wander through the Cemetery of Confucius, a serene, ancient forest that holds the graves of the sage and more than 100,000 of his descendants. You are walking through an unbroken family line of 78 generations, a concept that is simply mind-boggling.

Insider Tip:

It is highly recommended to hire a local guide in Qufu. The sites are rich with symbolism, and without someone to explain the stories behind the tortoise-borne steles, the dragon-carved columns, and the ceremonial gates, much of the profound historical and cultural significance will be lost.
