The Dragon's Backbone: Climbing the Steps of an Agricultural Masterpiece
From high above, they say the winding, layered terraces look like the scales on a dragon's back as it slumbers across the mountains. The Longsheng Rice Terraces are a stunning testament to centuries of agricultural artistry, a landscape carved by the Zhuang and Yao minority peoples that is both immensely productive and breathtakingly beautiful.
The experience is a journey upwards. You'll hike along stone paths that wind through the terraces, passing through traditional wooden villages that cling to the mountainsides. With every step, the view gets more spectacular. You’ll look down on layers upon layers of terraces curving around the hills, their shape and color changing dramatically with the seasons. In spring, they are pools of water reflecting the sky; in summer, a sea of lush green; and in autumn, a cascade of golden, ripening rice.
Insider Tip:
For the most immersive experience, plan an overnight stay. Hike from the lower village of Ping'an up to the higher Jinkeng/Dazhai area and stay in a wooden guesthouse. Waking up in the morning to a panoramic view of the terraces from your window, often floating above a sea of clouds, is an absolutely unforgettable travel memory.
