Finding China's Inner Hawaii on the Tropical Shores of Sanya
When you picture China, "tropical paradise" might not be the first image that comes to mind. But travel to the country's southernmost tip, to the island of Hainan, and you'll find exactly that. The resort city of Sanya is China's answer to Hawaii, a sun-drenched escape of swaying palm trees, long sandy beaches, and warm, turquoise water.
This is a place to unwind and indulge. You can spend your days lounging on the pristine sands of Yalong Bay, known for having the clearest water and the most luxurious resorts. You can try your hand at surfing in the lively waves of Dadonghai Bay, popular with a younger, more active crowd. And as evening falls, there’s nothing better than finding a simple beachfront restaurant, ordering a feast of fresh-caught seafood, and eating with your toes in the sand as you watch the sunset over the South China Sea.
Insider Tip:
For a more relaxed and authentic beach experience away from the big resort crowds, head to Haitang Bay. While the waves on this stretch of coast can be stronger (making it less ideal for swimming), the beach is often pristine, beautiful, and far less crowded. It's also home to the world's largest duty-free shopping complex, if you're looking for a break from the sun.
