Tongli: The Water Town That Time (Almost) Forgot
In a region famous for its picturesque water towns, many have become bustling, almost theme-park-like attractions. Tongli, however, has managed to keep its quiet, authentic soul. This is a town defined by its 15 rivers and 49 ancient stone bridges, a place where you can still see locals going about their daily lives along the canals, seemingly untouched by the rush of the modern world.
The real joy of Tongli is simply wandering without a map. You'll cross graceful, arched bridges, watch boats glide by, and stumble upon hidden gems like the Tuisi Garden (Retreat and Reflection Garden), a beautiful and compact UNESCO World Heritage site. You'll see locals washing clothes in the canals and playing mahjong in canalside teahouses. Be sure to walk across the town's three most famous bridges—Taiping (Peace), Jili (Luck), and Changqing (Longevity)—a local tradition said to bring good fortune.
Insider Tip:
Like all water towns, the secret to the best experience is to spend the night. After the tour groups leave in the late afternoon, a peaceful quiet descends. In the evening, many of the canals are beautifully illuminated. Find a small, family-run guesthouse with a room overlooking a canal for a truly peaceful and romantic escape.
