In the Footsteps of Faith: Walking the Sacred Heart of Lhasa

In Lhasa, the air is thin, but faith is thick. It’s a city that moves to the rhythm of prayer wheels and whispered mantras. To truly understand its soul, you must walk the Barkhor Circuit, the sacred path that encircles the Jokhang Temple, Tibet's most holy shrine. This isn't a sightseeing stroll; it’s to join a living river of devotion that has flowed for centuries.

You'll be swept up in a tide of pilgrims, many of whom have traveled thousands of miles on foot, their faces etched with devotion. You’ll see them spinning prayer wheels, thumbing prayer beads, and prostrating themselves fully on the smooth stones with every few steps. The air is rich with the heady scent of juniper incense and yak butter lamps burning in the temple. This walk, past shops selling prayer flags and turquoise jewelry, with the magnificent Potala Palace looming in the distance, is an immersion into one of the world's most profound spiritual cultures.

Insider Tip:

Always walk the Barkhor Circuit, and any other holy site in Tibet, in a clockwise direction to follow the flow of pilgrims. It is a fundamental sign of respect. Also, the high altitude of Lhasa (3,650m / 12,000ft) demands you take it slow. There is no better place to practice mindful, deliberate movement.
